Science education
Guest Observer (PI and CoI) on the ROSAT and ISO satellites. User of the ROSAT, Einstein Observatory, and IRAS data archives. Observer at the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory 1.3 m and 2.4 m telescopes and at the NRAO 140 ft telescope.
As an instructor of introductory astronomy at the
University
of Virginia, I addressed misconceptions via pre- and post-tests and
will be utilizing active learning techniques in large lecture-format
classes.
At the University of Michigan, I supervised
an undergraduate research assistant who used IRAF to reduce optical
photometry of FIR-bright elliptical galaxies.
As a teaching assistant at the University of
Michigan, I led discussion groups and labs in introductory
astronomy courses for non-majors, including the use of 8 inch
Celestrons and a planetarium. I created and graded homework sets, wrote
exam questions and graded exams, gave lectures on subjects
of interest to the class, and gave review sessions to standing room only crowds.
As Co-founder and Director of the University of Michigan Astronomy Outreach Program , I planned and participated in events such as:
Planetarium shows, computer demonstrations, and telescope use on campus
for k-12 students and other interested groups
Hands-on demonstrations in schools,
integrated with the local curriculum
One year of professional training at Boston University, a member of
the League of Theater Training Programs.
Co-founder and Artistic Director (1981-1983) Independent Student Theatre
Company.
Technical experience in stage management,
set design and construction, costume design and makeup, lighting and
special effects.
