Lederberg, Joshua (1925-)
    

American geneticist who, with Tatum, showed that different E. Coli bacteria strains could be combined such that their genetic material intermingled. For this discovery, he shared the 1958 Nobel prize in medicine with Tatum, he and Beadle. In 1952, he showed that bacteriophages could transfer genetic material between bacteria, a phenomenon he named transduction.
