Astronomy 130 Lecture Notes

Fall 2006

Lectures in this course will be topic-oriented and will not closely follow the structure of the presentations in either the Lab Manual or Edmund's Mag 5 Star Atlas. Notes for the lecture presentations will be posted here the Friday before each lecture. Most will be in HTML format for easiest retrieval over the Web, but you may need an Adobe PostScript or Acrobat reader for some material.

I will assume that you have read over and are familiar with the notes BEFORE the corresponding lecture. The in-class presentation will then be mainly a review of the material in the notes, rather than a complete description from first principles. I will be happy to elaborate on any topics that aren't clear from the notes, but you should come prepared with questions.

To help you think about the main points in each lecture, there is a set of review questions for each one.

You can print out a hardcopy of the notes to bring to class and mark up during lecture.

Web links to other useful information or pertinent illustrations are included on the guides and on the ASTR 130 Web Links page. You are encouraged to use these to make the subject matter more interesting or clear...but you are not required to know any of this additional material unless it was discussed in class.

Lecture 2: Introduction to Telescopes

Lecture 3: Motions in the Sky & Coordinate Systems
