General Astronomy

Spring 2006

This course provides a physics-based, mathematical introduction to the astronomy of black holes, the interstellar medium, the Milky Way galaxy, other galaxies, cosmology, and planets. It is intended primarily for Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Physics majors. Topics which are covered include: black holes; close binaries and X-ray sources; the interstellar medium; the structure and formation of the Milky Way; the nature of other galaxies and their origins; active galaxies and quasars; the large-scale structure of the Universe; the expanding universe, cosmology, the Big Bang, and the early Universe; and planets.
