Joint UVA/NRAO Colloquium
| Date & Time | Thursday November 12, 2009 4:00-5:00pm |
| Location | NRAO Auditorium |
| Title | Structure and Evolution of Protoplanetary Disks |
| Speaker | John Carpenter, California Institute of Technology | | Abstract | The properties and evolution of circumstellar disks around
young (< 10 Myr) stars provide a means to investigate the formation of
planetary systems. I present recent results from the Spitzer Space
Telescope that probe the evolution of disks in this time period, including
the dissipation of gas-rich primordial disks and the formation of debris
systems. In addition, I will present sub-arcsecond resolution CARMA images
of the dust emission in an example of primordial disks in the Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus molecular clouds. From these data we can infer the
radial distribution of dust in the disks and search for evolutionary
trends in the disk structure. |
