AbstractThe planet Venus will transit the face of the Sun, as seen from the Earth, on Tuesday June 5th, beginning shortly after 6pm as seen from Charlottesville. This will be the last Transit of Venus until December of 2117. Ed Murphy will discuss the history of transit observations, and explain why Transits of Venus occur so rarely. He will also explore why they have been so important in the past, and why they are still worth observing today.
