Picture of the Month

The Large Binocular Telescope has recently tested the next generation of adaptive optics. This technology rapidly flexes the mirrors of the LBT to exactly counteract the distortions introduced by the Earth's atmosphere, yielding an image that is superior to that of even the Hubble Space Telescope. This technology, coupled with the LBT's twin 8.4-meter mirrors, make this an unrivaled instrument for astronomical research. The image shows the center of the globular cluster M92 in unprecedented detail. UVa is a partner in the international collaboration that operates the LBT Observatory.
