As can be seen from figure 4, the galaxy HI signal is unaffected by the blanking process. However, the radar signal is almost eliminated due to blanking. This results in a smoother baseline which allows better estimation of the HI flux. The line profile could have been detected without any blanking and relatively little data need to be discarded for this.
