Research Interests
Solar physics, especially flare physics. Most of my work focused on radio emission of the Sun. In the recent years, I spent most of my time working on coherent radio bursts, which are believed to be intimately related to magnetic energy release during flares. These coherent bursts are characterized by their very high brightness temperature and narrow frequency bandwidth, and carry important information about particle acceleration, transportion, and dynamics. Data from radio spectrometers and interferometers were used to study their spectral and temporal structures in order to understand their emission mechanisms and their roles in flares. Multi-wavelength data were also used to disentangle the complexities of solar flares, e.g., optical, UV/EUV, SXR, HXR. I am going to participate in the commissioning work of the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) for solar observations. In the very near future, I expect to observe the Sun with the EVLA's unprecedent bandwidth, spectral resolution, time resolution, and spatial resolution.
  • Sep 2008-present: Working with Dr. Tim Bastian at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory on solar radio physics. Recent work includes interplanetary Type II radio bursts, solar hard X-rays, and interferometric study of solar coherent radio bursts.
  • Sep 2005-June 2008: Working with Dr. Yihua Yan at the National Astronomical Observatory of China on fine (spectra) structures of solar microwave bursts
