Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to distribute the second announcement of the
international workshop on Active OB-stars: Laboratories for Stellar &
Circumstellar Physics to be held at Hokkai-Gakuen University, Sapporo,
Japan, for August 29 - September 2, 2005. With this announcement we
call for papers and encourage you to make formal registration for the
workshop, the information for which can be found on the web site
http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/be2005/.
Scientific Motivation
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers working on Active
OB-Stars, exchanging various ideas and enhancing the interaction
between participants, utilizing these stars as laboratories for
studying the underlying physical processes -- magnetic fields,
pulsation, rotation, radiative instabilities, binarity -- with focus
on implications for the structure and evolution of the central star,
as well as any associated circumstellar envelope, disk, and mass
outflow. Such a broad range of physical processes mandates
consideration of several specific observational classes of Active
OB-stars, including classical Be stars, magnetic Bp stars,
Cephei stars, slowly-pulsating
B (SPB) stars, Be X-ray binaries, and B[e] stars.
Some of the key issues to be discussed are:
- What mechanism(s) are responsible for driving material from
the stellar surface and the oft-observed reappearance and
disappearance of circumstellar emission over times scales ranging
from months to years?
- Under what circumstances is the material propelled directly
into an outflowing wind, extended over a broad "cloud'' or
confined in a thin disk?
- Are the processes feeding circumstellar material impulsive or
steady?
- In the case of Be stars, how close is the stellar rotation to
the critical rate?
- Is the development of a disk one common phase in the evolution
of rapidly rotating stars, or is it an evolutionary branch?
- Is rapid rotation an intrinsic consequence of massive star
evolution, or might it sometimes depend on external factors like
cluster membership, metallicity, or an earlier phase of close
binary mass exchange?
- How does binarity influence the ejection and evolution of
circumstellar and/or disk material?
Preliminary Programme
The workshop is divided in five sessions with different themes. Each
session will be composed of invited reviews, contributed oral
presentations and posters. The number of invited reviews is small, so
as to offer an important space to many contributed talks and
thematic discussion sessions, which will take place at the end of each
half day. Posters will be at display during the entire workshop and
there will be ample time for poster viewing during breaks.

de Paris-Meudon, France), who all have been pioneers of the physical
modeling of mass-loss and circumstellar disks of Be stars as well as
of their observational studies for several decades.
Call for Papers
Participants who wish to contribute to the workshop are requested to
submit the abstract using the abstract submission form on the workshop
web page. Oral contributions will be selected by the SOC. The selected
authors will be informed by email in due time and the programme will
be updated accordingly. The deadline for abstract submission will be
May 15, 2005 for oral presentations and those who apply for the
financial support. The deadline for poster presentations is June 30,
2005.
Location and Transportation
Sapporo is the capital of Japan's northernmost island. Conveniently
situated close to Sapporo, New Chitose Airport has frequent domestic
flights to/from the main international airports at Narita, Haneda,
Chubu and Kansai, as well as regular direct flights to several cities
overseas. For more information about Hokkaido and the city of Sapporo,
please visit
http://www.pref.hokkaido.jp/index-e.html
and
http://www.global.city.sapporo.jp/.
Between New-Chitose Airport and JR (Japan Railway) Sapporo Station,
the JR airport express train is available between 8 a.m. and 10
p.m. from New Chitose Airport to JR Sapporo Station, and between 6
a.m. and 8 p.m. from JR Sapporo Station to New Chitose Airport. The
train runs every 15 minutes. The entire trip takes 36-40 minutes and
costs 1,040 JPY (one way). For additional information, please visit
New Chitose Airport website at
http://www.new-chitose-airport.co.jp/language/english/index.html.
The time table for the Rapid Airport Train from New Chitose Airport to
Sapporo is available at
http://www.jrhokkaido.co.jp/global/e2.html.
Public bus services are also available. It costs 820 JPY (one way) and
takes about 70-80 minutes between the airport and JR Sapporo
Station. Please note that the bus schedule can be greatly affected by
traffic conditions. The workshop will be held at Hokkai-Gakuen
University, Sapporo. To get to the workshop venue from JR Sapporo
Station, it may be convenient to take the Subway TOHO line at the
subway station Sapporo beside JR Sapporo Station for FUKUZUMI, then
get off at GAKUENMAE station (the third station from the Sapporo
station) and follow the way out #3 to find an instruction map to the
workshop venue. It takes 5-6 minutes from the subway Sapporo station
to Gakuenmae station.
Social Events
We are planning several social events: Welcoming reception, Excursion
tour, and Banquet. For the excursion tour, we plan a half-day guided
bus tour to OTARU, where we will visit several places, including the
TANAKA brewer, the AOYAMA's honored house, etc.

When you apply for travel support,
please submit your abstract as well. The applicants will be informed
of the selection results by email in due time.
Visa
Participants are advised to check early with their travel agent or the
nearest Japanese consulate about visa requirements and to apply for a
visa several months before the workshop, as visa applications can take
a long time. The LOC can provide a letter of invitation, but please
contact us as soon as possible.
Proceedings
The proceedings of the workshop will be published in the ASP
Conference Series, and the editors will be S. Stefl (chief editor),
S. Owocki and A. Okazaki. The registered participant will receive a
