TENURE-TRACK ASTRONOMY POSITION

Using dedicated photometric and spectroscopic telescopes, Astronomy/Physics at the University of Illinois at Springfield trains undergraduates in stellar research. Astronomy/Physics at UIS invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin August 16, 2006. Successful candidates must have Ph.D. in hand in astronomy or astrophysics with an emphasis in stellar astronomy, and optical observatory experience. Teaching expectation: a wide range of introductory undergraduate astronomy and physics courses, including some combination of astronomy and physics; stellar atmospheres and interiors; galaxies; cosmology; solar system; laboratory courses in practical astronomy, spectroscopy, and photometry; classical mechanics; electricity and magnetism; and quantum physics. Some previous teaching experience preferred. This position also includes a significant public outreach component. Research using the university's optical telescopes, together with eventual directorship of these facilities, is also expected. The Search Committee will begin reviewing applications December 1, 2005, and will continue until the position is filled.
