Cassini, Giovanni (1625-1712)
    

French-Italian astronomer who measured the period of rotation of Jupiter Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy and issued a table of the motions of Jupiter's Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy moons. He also discovered the moons of Saturn Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy Iapetus Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy (1671), Rhea Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy (1672), Dione Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy (1684), and Tethys Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy (1684). Cassini discovered that Saturn's rings were divided by a dark gap. He also determined the parallax of Mars, Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy which allowed the calculation of the distance to Mars Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy and the Earth Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy-Sun Eric Weisstein's World of Astronomy distance.
