Discovered in the mid-1980s. They encode a sequence of 60 amino acids that is the same in all organisms from
fruit flies to mice to humans. They are key regulators of embryonic development. Evidence suggests that they may
contribute to evolution. They were discovered by M. Scott and Amy Weiner at Indiana University and W. Gehring's
group at the University of Basel in fruit flies.
