Virtual Private Networking

Astronomy VPN

The Astronomy VPN service will allow your home computer access to all of the computing resources that you'd have acess to if you were on campus. To do this, it connects to the VPN server here on campus, and shares the IP address of that server with your home computer. Once connected, any website that looks at your IP address will see the IP for the VPN server and will grant or disallow services based on that IP regardless of what internet service provider you're connecting from.

To set up the Astronomy VPN service, download one of these two files:

Mac OS XWindows

Unzip the file you download and double click on the resulting icon inside.

On a Mac, system preferences will open and ask you for your username. Enter this information and apply. Once you press connect, the system will connect to the Astronomy VPN server. Once connected, you will have access to any services that you'd have while on campus.

On a Windows computer, the VPN setup program will configure your network settings and give you a dialog box asking if this is to be set up only for you or for all users on your computer. Select which is appropriate, and the next dialog box will ask you to enter your astronomy VPN username and password. Once you connect, you will have access to any services you have while normally on campus.
