About Me
This section is about myself and the work I do from day to day.
I was born January 10, 1980 in Dayton, Ohio. My father at that time was in the Air Force stationed at Wright Patterson AFB there, where my mother, myself and he remained until we moved back to Virginia sometime when I was about 2 years old.
I grew up in a small town In southern Virginia named South Boston (or more accurately a smaller place on the map named Turbeville). Since Turbeville is only famous for its cantaloupes, and since I am not very fond of such mellons, I usually claim to be from either South Boston or Danville, VA when people ask.
In 1998, I moved to Charlottesville Virginia to attend the University of Virginia. Originally I planned on being an electrical engineer, but after discovering a serious math deficiency I opted to transfer into the field of Astronomy. I am currently a part time student working on finishing my Bachelor's of Arts in the field of Astronomy.
My main interests lie in computers and operating systems. I generally tend to focus on the levels between the hardware and operating systems - with some small ventures into working with code and compilers. I tend to enjoy working at the command line rather than using a graphical interface like windows. As such, I rely heavily on the Linux (and to a smaller extent solaris) operating systems.
This interest has opened up many opportunities for myself during my college career. Soon after moving to Charlottesville, I began working as a Computing Help Desk phone technician for ITC, the main technology group at UVa. As I began to focus more on Astronomy, I later began working as the 2nd systems administrator for the UVa Astronomy Dept. I am current employed full time in this position working to develop and migrate a 100 machine network of Sun Solaris based computers to a PC/Linux based network over the next few years. I also maintain a separate section of this website dedicated to the computing projects I work on, including my Beowulf HPC Cluster, and an email server customized for our environment.
I also tend to enjoy working with some mechanical projects. Currently, my main project is the restoration to showroom quality of a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle. I've also owned a list of vehicles - a 1984 Isuzu Pickup (Diesel), a 1998 Toyota Tacoma (not for hire), and a 1998 Yamaha Seca II motorcycle. Currently my main mode of transportation is the Toyota Tacoma.
I enjoy quest and RPG video games (I think I finally own all the Final Fantasy titles). I have an extensive dvd collection of action movies which I very much enjoy. I collect many of the small 1/18 scale models of many Porsche designs - my favorite is the Porsche 356B Coupe.
