Cold dark matter (CDM) refers to an exotic particle whose energy is low (hence cold) at the time it decouples from the ordinary (baryonic) matter. In a cold dark matter cosmological model of structure formation, the CDM is primarily responsible for structure formation. CDM cosmologies produce a Bottom-Up hierarchy of structure formation.
