Cosmic rays are very high energy atomic nuclei (mostly protons) traveling through space at high speeds close to that of light. When they hit atoms in the upper atmosphere of the Earth they generate short-lived exotic particles, in much the same way that experimental particle accelerators like CERN or Fermilab work.
