A Halo is an extended region surrounding a galaxy. The halo contains globular clusters and other old stars. The halo apparently has considerable mass but relatively low luminosity, suggesting that a lot of dark matter must be present in the halo. The matter may consist of compact dark objects (MACHOs) or exotic, weakly interacting particles (WIMPs).
