A relationship between the pulsation period of a variable star (e.g. a Cepheid) and its luminosity (or absolute magnitude). Generally the more luminous the star the longer the pulsation period. The relationship permits distances to be measured. One determineds the pulsation period and uses the relation to get the absolute magnitude. The difference between the absolute and apparent magnitude of the star then gives you the distance.
