An acronym for a Weakly-Interacting Massive Particle. A particle with a nonzero rest mass which participates only in the weak nuclear interaction. Such particles (currently hypothetical) could fill space and provide gravitational force without any associated luminosity. As such they are a candidate for dark matter.
An example of a candidate WIMP is the neutrino.
