A semidetached binary star system where matter is accreting onto a neutron star. As hydrogen accretes onto a neutron star (possibly producing a variable X-ray source) the hydrogen is promptly burned into helium. The helium accumulates until the temperature is high enough for a degenerate helium burning explosion. This explosion produces the characteristic burst of X-rays.
