Dark Skies, Bright Kids
Dark Skies, Bright Kids is a program, developed by Dr. Kelsey Johnson, to bring astronomy to rural elementary schools in Albemarle County. I have been honored to have the opportunity to participate in weekly activities, help develop lesson plans and our childrens book, and promote our activities. Please check out our website for information about hands-on astronomy, see pictures and video of this program in action, interact with us via Twitter and Facebook, and find out how you can help astronomy education in Albemarle County.
New Media
I'm now blogging for Discovery News: Space!
In 2009, I produced two podcasts for the successful, audience-driven 365 Days of Astronomy podcast, a cornerstone project of the International Year of Astronomy. I produced two more in 2010 as the podcast moved to Astrosphere.
National Radio Astronomy Observatory Open House
The NRAO in Charlottesville has hosted an Open House or festival in the fall for a number of years. Check back to see when the next event will be held! Activities include public talks, instrumentation demos, and lots of activities for kids. I'm usually there with a demo or three!
Outreach at University of Virginia Observatories
McCormick Observatory at the University of Virginia hosts Public Nights on the first and third Fridays of every month. Events are always free and we are open rain or shine. (Telescope viewing will only be open on clear nights.) In addition, we hos t a biannual Fan Mountain Public Night at our larger observatory just south of Charlott esville. Go the website to find out how to get free tickets to the next one! I c an be found at one or both of these open houses about once per semester.
Public Talks
I have given a few public talks of varying length, mostly focused on radio astronomy, interferometry, or the epoch of reionization. I'm always looking for new venues and topics!
