Objections to Astrology

A Statement by 186 Leading Scientists

... We, the undersigned - astronomers, astrophysicists, and scientist in other fields - wish to caution the public against the unquestioning acceptance of the predictions and advice given ... by astrologers. Those who wish to believe in astrology should realize that there is no scientific foundation to its tenets.

... It is simply a mistake to imagine that the forces exerted by stars and planets at the moment of birth can in any way shape our futures. ...

One would imagine, in this day of widespread enlightenment and education, that it would be unnecessary to debunk beliefs based on magic and superstition. ...

We believe that the time has come to challenge directly, and forcefully, the pretentious claims of astrological charlatans.

The Congress of Astrological Organizations wrote to the signers:

"... We have been unable to locate any published report of your studies or evaluations or experiments relating to astrology...We would like to print such scientific reports ..

"Could you please send us a reprint of the work which led you to your conclusion about astrology? Or tell us where we can buy one?

"We also would like a detailed commentary from you, as an authority in both science and astrology on the various articles in this issue of our magazine ...

Awaiting your early response, Yours truly, Al Morrison"
