We have tried to include programs that we know of which frequently send students to graduate programs. We have found that these are interested in what the large programs are up to. At past meetings attendees from these institutions often have breakout sessions to discuss topics of common interest. The bulk of the proposed budget will support a University of Virginia graduate student who will work primarily under the direction of CoI Scott Ransom. In addition to his NRAO appointment Ransom holds a UVa appointment, and it was most efficient to submit the proposal through UVa. Under Ransom's direction the grad student will conduct monthly ongoing GBT monitoring observations of the milli-second pulsars (MSPs) in Terzan5 and then process these data on a supercomputer to 1) update the timing solutions and positions for all known MSPs and 2) search for additional highly-accelerated MSPs that have been missed in earlier analyses (like the fastest known MSP Ter5ad, which we hope to detect in the HST imaging). In addition, the student will help to establish the radio/OIR/X-ray frame ties that will be crucial for the project, and which will enable the identification of MSPs and/or other sources in HST, ground-based IR, and Chandra X-ray data. The MSP companions will be very faint and the stellar density in Terzan 5 and NGC 6266 is very high. It is essential to have the best possible positions for both the HST images and the MSP. The HST photometry will be done in Bologna. Rood will coadvise the student, aid in the interpretation of the data, and help integrate these results with our other projects involving stellar interaction products in globular clusters. Specifically we have budgeted: Graduate student stipend (55%), 1/2 in-state tuition, and 2/3 of the health insurance cost (UVa pays the other 1/3 for RAs) for the academic year 2007-08 and summer of 2007. Computer Support -at- 1/4 the standard Astronomy Department rate for Rood. Page charges: 1/2 cost for 10 ApJ pages; entered as full cost for 5 pages Travel either Ransom, Rood, or the student to visit Bologna. We have found that roughly annual extended face-to-face meetings greatly speed the progress of our joint projects. I intend to make a common mailing list for this group. If you would like to be removed from this list please let me know. rtr-at-virginia-dot-edu "Thomas Robertson; Ball State" -4fy "John Laird; Bowling Green" "Joel Weisberg; Carleton College" -sc "Thomas Balonek; Colgate" -ok03 -4fn "Robert Boyle; Dickinson" -sc "Froney Crawford; Franklin and Marshall" -sc "Larry Marschall; Gettysburg" -sc "Robert Cadmus; Grinnell College" -sc "Kim Venn; Macalaster College" -sc "Ravi Pandey; Michigan Technological Univ." -n02 Physicist "Stephen Ratcliff; Middlebury College" -sc "Dan Stinebring; Oberlin College" -sc "Daniel Snowden-Ifft; Occidental College" -sc "Bryan Penprase; Pomona" "Tyler Nordgren; University of Redlands" -sc "Mark Nook; St. Cloud State" "Doug Leonard; San Diego State University" -sc "Lancelot Kao; City College of San Francisco" -a "Susan Edwards; Smith" -4fn "Eric Jensen; Swarthmore" -4n "Jonathan Marr; Union College" -4m "Debra Elmegren; Vassar" -4fy -6rep "George McCook; Villanova" -4m "Wendy Hagen-Bauer; Wellesley College" -sc "Bill Herbst; Wesleyan" -n704 -4fy "Ulysses Sofia; Whitman College" -sc "Jay Pasachoff; Williams" -n704 -4fy Non-universities: "Dale Frail; NRAO Socorro" ; -n06 "Buell Jannuzi; KPNO" "Eileen Friel; NSF" "Pam Rudisill; STScI secretaory to Matt Mountain, AAS "Craig Wheeler; AAS President" "Kevin Marvel; AAS"
