Shades of Grey

A thousand shades of grey
arrayed above the brown earth,
to nourish it to full glory
of a thousand shades of green.

A thousand shades of green
dancing in the breeze alive,
basking in the sun - blooming
to a thousand other colours.

A thousand colours of spring
glistening after the showers,
the April air full of life
a thousand smells of flowers.

A thousand smells of flowers
we shut out of our cages of steel,
while we scurry under the city
in a thousand tunnels of damp.

A thousand walls we built around
to push back nature and its glory,
to hide away from life - and run
a thousand laps on our mouse-wheels.
