Using the slide projector

The Ektragraphic III slide projector is located in the projection cabinet at the back of Clark 140 with the data projector. Its operation is fairly straight-forward. It draws power from the cabinet. The powercircuit can be switched on or off by the power switch located next to the cabinet and by the power switch next to the AV closet at the front of the room.

A wired remote control at the front of the room will operate the slide projector (advance, reverse, focus). The projector is set up to project through a circular window at the front of the cabinet. A very common problem is to misalign the slide projector lens and the window. If you see a partial image on the screen or no image, this might be the problem.

To operate the slide projector:

  1. Open the projection cabinet. Turn power switch at rear of projecter to ``lamp'' and turn on power circuit. Place the slide tray on the projector and lock it in place. For more detailed instructions on loading/unloading slide tray, orienting slides, and dealing with slide jams, see posted info on door of projector cabinet.

  2. Lower the movie screen located at the front of Clark 140.

  3. Project the first slide to make sure it is correctly placed in the tray. Align the projector's lens with the circular window on the front of the projection cabinet.

  4. The projector should be focused. If you need to adjust to focus, you may do so either on the projector itself or with the remote control at the front of the room.
  5. Turn off power circuit.
  6. Show your slides from front of room using on/off power switch and remote contol.
  7. Take out the slide tray (See info posted on door of projector cabinet). Leave the projector in the "fan" setting while you are closing up so that the bulb will cool properly.
  8. Raise the movie screen.
  9. Once the projector has cooled somewhat, turn it off and close up the projection cabinet.

Bulbs have a tendency to burn out on the slide projector. The average bulb has a lifespan of some 30 hours. If a bulb burns out, please contact a TA to replace it. If a bulb burns out during class and needs to be replaced immediately, then follow the instructions below to replace the bulb.

  1. Get a replacement bulb (in small cubic box labelled 'FHS') from the box of accessories in AV closet. This is a small portable cabinet on the floor of the A/V closet, on the left side.
  2. Follow instructions on attached page from Kodak's instruction manual.
  3. You must use gloves from toolkit in AV closet to change bulbs! This prevents contamination of the bulb surface which could produce an early bulb failure.
  4. Dispose of broken bulb
  5. Alert TA so that replacement bulbs can be replenished.
  6. In the case of an urgency, there is a spare slide-projector in the locked cabinet below the projector. Exchange the positions of the two projectors. Connect the cable for the remote, and the power cable. Both the projectors are identical.
